Do you like mashup music?
It’s one of my favorite things in the world, and it’s really like how I do therapy. Mashups are DJ-engineered masterpieces in which the DJ mixes elements of two different songs and crafts a brand-new jam.
There’s excitement to a good mashup, and you wonder what you will hear next. It’s something familiar but new. One of my favorites is Marvin Gaye singing “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” over the Gorillaz instrumental “Feel Good Inc.” Those songs are about 30 years apart but dance and flow so well together.
My therapy mixtape has some fantastic tracks on it. I’m mashing up the track of talk therapy techniques with Christian discipleship in God’s word. I’m going to ask a lot of questions and use a lot of scripture. How you process the questions and the beats you add to the track will also spice up the mix.
In therapy, you’ll be making music, too!
You’ll be doing some DJ work in therapy as well! I’ll help you spin the discs of your thoughts and feelings to communicate what’s happening in your world and deep in your soul. Then, we’ll use practical steps to help you heal, reach your goals, and overcome your challenges.
I also have a goal to help you be independent of therapy and be able to achieve your goals without me someday. Did you know that you don’t have to be in therapy forever? Once you’re back on track, the skills and things we’ve worked on in therapy will empower you to rock steady on your own.
Rock Steady, as in the 80s song from The Whispers, not the rhino from Ninja Turtles. It means you’re consistent in your behavior and not wavering. PS: If you’ve never heard of that song from the Whispers, look it up. It’s a bop, I promise.
They call me MC Welcome: Men and couples are welcome.
Men sometimes believe they can’t benefit from therapy because talking through issues is often seen as feminine. Fear not, fellas. Men benefit from my therapy sessions because we explore thoughts and feelings to reach a goal and develop practical steps to achieve that goal.
Couples often have a concern that the therapist is just going to choose someone’s side and make the other look like a villain. When I do couples counseling, I’m on the side of you both having a healthy marriage relationship. If either of you is clapping off beat, then we will work on helping you get back on track.
To me, prayer is essential.
I also offer to pray with you before we start the session. As a culture, I know it sounds friendly and kind for people to share that they will pray for each other, but it’s rare to have someone stop and pray with you.
I don’t want you to have to wonder if your therapist is praying for you. I want you to know I will pray for you during the session and the week.
Here are my incredible office details.
When you come to sessions at the office, you’ll see how great it is! There’s a tablet for you to sign in once you arrive, and there’s a waiting room with nice chairs and a bench to relax in. There’s also a trick to the water cooler in the waiting room. Let me explain how it works.
You’ll see two buttons on the water cooler – one for warm water and one for cold water. Your instincts will tell you to touch the button. But listen. Please don’t touch the button. It is a zero-touch cooler. The way you get the water is to hover your hand over the button. If you touch the button, it’ll go into this stop-and-start loop that takes forever to finish. It took me a while to figure all this out, so I’m just sharing so you don’t have to relive my struggle.
Now that you’ve learned about the water cooler, let me tell you about the room where we have sessions. The session room is very safe and relaxing. The chairs are comfortable, the lighting is good, and the windows are lovely. Also, I have a stock of tissues. So, if you think you need to cry, go ahead! We’ve got plenty of tissue paper.
There are location perks.
The office is easy to get to. It’s near Northwest Highway and I-75 in Dallas. It’s close to NorthPark Mall, so you and your boo can go out later for a hot date at the food court or browse the Apple Store after our session.
There’s also a Half Price Books store nearby, so if I told you about an awesome book during the session, you could pick it up on your way home.
About Me
My mission in life is to help others.
I want to help everyone have healthy and holy lives, marriages, and families. While growing up, I knew I wanted a great marriage, but first, I needed to break many generational chains and problems.
I did a family tree exercise and mapped out all the marriages in my family. It was hard to find more than one marriage that looked remotely healthy. I realized that I wasn’t going to get there by just winging it.
Statistically, divorce rates were rising, and two-parent households were becoming rarer. To make a long story short, I was determined to find a better way.
So, my journey for health and holiness began.
I learned what the Bible said about God’s relationship with us and how often aspects of that relationship become reflected in marriage. I read many books by Christian authors and learned that my marriage wouldn’t be healthy if I weren’t healthy.
Then, I studied marriage and family therapy and God’s design for marriage, and ultimately learned that marriage is hard work, but it’s good work. But with good work comes a great harvest.
Want to know how all of that turned out? I’ve been married to my beautiful bride for 13 years, and we have four amazing children – three daughters and one son, ages 12 to infant!
My kids love playing games, using their imaginations like their dad, and reading fiction books like their mom. They learned all those corny jokes from their mom, though. I didn’t teach them that. 😜
Education and training enable me to help others.
My B.S. degree is from Dallas Baptist University, and my M.A. is from Amberton University. I have certification credentials and memberships: Certified Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts Facilitator, American Association of Christian Counselors Member, and Focus on the Family Christian Counselors Network Member.
I’m currently a Licensed Professional Counseling Associate (License #91882) practicing in the State of Texas. My supervisor is Dr. Keith Cobern, LPC Supervisor. He’s been practicing for over 30 years and helps me grow and become a better counselor.
I opened Luminous Christian Counseling in 2023 and love being able to provide guidance and a plan for clients to heal.
Dallas is my stomping ground.
I grew up in Dallas, Texas, most of my life, so I’m a Dallas Cowboys fan living in Texas. My dad is from New York, and my mom is from Texas, so my accent sounds “mad mixed up.”
I love eating spicy or saucy food with good friends, playing games with my family, listening to worship music (especially mashups) and video game soundtracks, and reading books about Christian living.
I enjoy my local church friends and am thankful for our community of believers.
